ABIDE – Rule of Law and the Problem of Responsible Obedience is a project funded by Next Generation EU.

It aims to critically analyze the problems posed by obedience to unlawful, unreasonable, or unjust directives and orders, with a focus on military forces and penitentiary institutions. The goal is to provide an in-depth empirical and theoretical analysis of responsible obedience, shedding light on the ethical dilemmas faced by decision-makers and presenting recommendations for reformulating current rules to address these challenges effectively.

Moreover, the project aims to carry out educational activities, primarily consisting of two training courses focused on the issue of responsible obedience. One course targets military judges and prosecutors, while the other targets penitentiary staff.

The research group comprises the University of Palermo, the University of Roma Tre, and the University of Pisa, bringing together a multidisciplinary team with expertise in law, ethics and sociology. Additionally, the project will benefit from collaborations with international partners, including the GRAL at the University of Brussels.
